September 9, 2026 update: the city's posted splash-pad season ran May 22-September 7. Fairmount's splash pad is separately marked "Opening TBD." Do not plan on water play without checking the latest city notice.

Fairmount Park

Playgrounds and a shaded picnic

The Universal Playground has separate areas for ages 2-5 and 5-12, sensory play and sand play. Park walking paths let you add a stroll to a playground outing.

Shade & picnics
Shaded picnic spots are part of the park. For a reserved group shelter, check the city's permit process and fees.
Parking & costs
Start at 2601 Fairmount Boulevard. Allow extra time around bandshell events, follow posted parking signs and check parking arrangements for organized events.
Before you go
The city currently marks Fairmount's splash-pad opening as TBD. Playground and picnic plans should not depend on water play being available.

Andulka Park

A park loop and active play

Combine the children's playground with walking or jogging paths, basketball and tennis facilities. This is a park-loop option when you want outdoor exercise without making a summit hike the main activity.

Shade & picnics
Picnic facilities and open meadow areas give you space for a break. Check the spot you choose for shade rather than assuming all play areas are covered.
Parking & costs
The city lists on-site parking and restrooms. Use 5201 Chicago Avenue near Central Avenue, and check separate court, program or shelter charges before booking.
Before you go
Andulka has a seasonal splash pad, but the city's posted 2026 season ended September 7. Check the current schedule before promising the kids water play.

Mount Rubidoux Park

An uphill walk and city views

Paved uphill roads, dirt trails and historic landmarks make this a walking outing rather than a playground stop. The park's 3.5 miles of paved roads describe its road network, not one prescribed loop.

Shade & picnics
For a shaded picnic and playground-focused afternoon, Fairmount is the better fit among these picks. Plan the mountain visit around walking, sun exposure and your group's pace.
Parking & costs
The city recommends the adjacent Ryan Bonaminio Park parking lot. Restrooms are there during park hours, not on the mountain. Surrounding street parking is limited.
Before you go
Mount Rubidoux is open dawn to dusk, with no trail lighting and no night hikes. Public vehicles are not allowed on its park roads.

California Citrus State Historic Park

Citrus groves and local history

Walk the Knoll Trail through the varietal citrus grove, explore local agricultural history and bring a picnic. Choose this for a garden-and-history outing rather than a playground visit.

Shade & picnics
Picnic areas are spread through the park, with group areas near the gazebo and lawn space beside the Sunkist Center. Check individual spots for shade and group-use arrangements.
Parking & costs
Enter at 9400 Dufferin Avenue. Regular vehicle day use is $7; eligible passes and discounts may apply. Group facilities and special events can have separate charges.
Before you go
The visitor center normally opens Friday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; park hours differ and change seasonally. Fruit picking is not allowed. Check the official schedule before going.

Planning a group picnic? The city's reservable shelters require a permit, with reservations at least 14 days ahead and a deposit and processing fee. A shaded picnic spot does not mean the whole playground or walking route is shaded.
